Joaquin Phoenix is reportedly in talks with Warner Bros. to play the Titular Character in The Joker standalone movie. Martin Scorsese will produce and Todd Phillips will direct the movie. Initially, Leonardo DiCaprio was rumored to helm the character. However, Warner Bros. and DC neglected to comment anything about the casting. So, it’s not clear but Todd Phillips has stated that Phoenix is the top choice to play the character.

If the deal doesn’t go through, then it’s a no-brainer. Joaquin Phoenix is known to turn down comic book roles. Recently, Phoenix was considered to play Lex Luthor in DC’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He was also considered by Marvel to play The Hulk in The Avengers and again for Doctor Strange. Phoenix will be next seen in Gus Van Sant film He Won’t Get Far on Foot.

Todd Phillips is set to co-write the script along with Scott Silver. The story revolves around the uprising of Joker set in 80’s Gotham City which will be more like a gritty crime drama rather than a comic book movie. This movie is the beginning of the expansion of DC Extended Universe. Warner Bros. is in the development of a new banner which will focus on unique standalone storylines for different characters from the DC Comics properties. The Studio is yet to name the new banner but it will not interfere with the already existing DC Universe. Jared Leto will reprise his role in the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel and the Joker/Harley Quinn movies. The standalone origin movie will create no impact on the Jared Leto’s portrayal of The Joker.

The Joker was previously reprised by Jack Nicholson in Batman, by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, and by Jared Leto in Suicide Squad. Todd Phillips will direct and will co-produce with Martin Scorsese. There is no definitive release date for this Origin movie.
