NBCUniversal announces Peacock, its new streaming service to debut on April 2020

NBCUniversal’s parent company Comcast announced to enter the streaming race late last year. Comcast is one of the largest telecommunications company in the US with 21 million subscribers. The streaming service is called Peacock, which is a homage to NBCUniversal’s logo. The company claims that “15,000 hours” of content on the day of launch. Comcast wishes to create a consumer-friendly streaming service without alienating its core users. Furthermore, the company is planning to offer Peacock free to its cable and internet consumers. Also, Comcast is in the process of negotiating with other pay-TV operators to provide the streaming service free for their subscribers as well. The company is yet to reveal any pricing details but did confirm an ad-free version at a higher rate.

Peacock Exclusive Originals

Comcast’s subsidiaries Universal Pictures, Focus Features and Dreamworks Animation to make exclusive Original Movies for Peacock. The company signed Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) to helm the “Battlestar Galactica” reboot and Mike Schur (The Good Place & Parks & Recreation) to helm “Punky Brewster” revival. The other Original titles include “Dr. Death” featuring Alec Baldwin, Jamie Dornan and Christian Slater based on the true-crime podcast. Meanwhile, Demi Moore will front the sci-fi drama “Brave New World” based on the Aldous Huxley novel. Original Comedies is in the works from late-night stars Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers and “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels. The creator’s list also includes Rashida Jones, Tracey Wigfield, Jada Pinkett Smith, Mike Schur and Ed Helms to create comedy programs. The streaming service will also stream live programming from NBC News and Sports. Classic teen comedy “Saved by the Bell” is also in the works for the streaming platform.

Peacock has partnered with Comcast’s subsidiary Telemundo to create Original Spanish-language programs. According to the company, Peacock will take center stage for streaming the “Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.”

Peacock Content Lineup

NBCUniversal has been reacquiring exclusive streaming rights to some of its classics. There are also some non-exclusive deals which will allow the content to stream on other platforms as well. The company still holds the distribution rights for some of their classics while it aired on other TV networks and gained popularity.
